Abstract
Group policies are rules that can be defined by an administrator for a user's desktop environment. They are simply configurations stored in active directory that are used to configure a computer's properties. These settings are managed by a group policy administrator and can be applied to one or multiple active directory objects, such as a site, domain, or organizational unit. It is important to know the structure of group policies and the functions they are capable of performing. They are used to manage and enforce company or organizational policies at the desktop level. Group policies are broken down into two configuration types: computer and user. There are important guidelines to remember when creating group policies. First, the users need to understand the Active Directory infrastructure and how it is used. One must remember the order of inheritance to administer group policies. One needs to customize the group policy and its use to meet the requirements of one's organization. A person should try to keep the group policy design simple to resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
