Abstract
This chapter introduces the basics and applications of switchable solvents as alternative greener and safer media for biocatalytic processes. It starts with an introduction presenting the two main classes of switchable solvents, namely, switchable polarity and switchable hydrophilicity solvents, their unique properties and characteristics, and the mechanism of switching of their physical properties by interaction with CO2. Then, it explains the principles and challenges for application of switchable solvents in biocatalysis technology. By the end of the chapter, the applications of switchable solvents in biocatalytic processes are elucidated. The core principles of the applications, the strategies and procedures used, and the key advantages gained by using switchable solvents are fully discussed.
