Abstract

Recent developments in the marine industry have resulted in the introduction of new designs (e.g., Catamarans and ships that use novel fuels in their main engines.) with improved seakeeping qualities and substantially increased speeds. However, existing ship types, such as bulk carriers, general cargo carriers, tankers, gas carriers, and container ships, have also undergone modifications that have enabled them to successfully face the cargo demands of the twenty-first century. While hull designs have seen radical changes, the same can be said in respect of the propulsion systems that are coming into use. Cleaner fuels will result in a greener environment, while new engine concepts will hopefully reduce atmospheric contaminants. Another area where considerable progress has been made is with regard to navigational aids. These advances will, hopefully, make the sea a safer place.
