Abstract

This chapter presents the foundations of algebra—polynomials, exponents, and radicals. A polynomial is an algebraic expression of a certain form. Polynomials play an important role in the study of algebra as many word problems translate into equations or inequalities that involve polynomials. Therefore, manipulative and mechanical aspects of polynomials serve as background for dealing with their applications. Two polynomials are equal if all like terms are identical and the degree of the product of two nonzero polynomials is the sum of the degrees of the polynomials. One of the central problems in algebra is that of finding solutions to a given polynomial equation. There is no real number that satisfies a simple polynomial equation.
