Abstract

Computer-based clinical decision support (CDS) is defined and illustrated. Purposes are delineated. Expansion of use of knowledge beyond CDS to enhance health and healthcare more generally is included under the rubric of CDS & Beyond. Factors enabling these enhanced perspectives and capabilities are identified. The scope of the book and audiences addressed are described. The history and challenges of achieving wide adoption of CDS are touched upon, to address the complexities of CDS & Beyond, and the kinds of interactions and components needed using knowledge are described. Three interacting lifecycles are delineated for acquiring, managing, and using knowledge in the care process are delineated.
