Abstract
This article analyses the travel patterns of US residents travelling overseas and attempts to identify trends. Europe — although still the major overseas destination — will continue to receive a declining proportion of US visitors throughout the 1990s as a result of increasing competition from other destinations. Economic improvement among the less industrialized countries — especially those of the Asia-Pacific region — will enable them to provide the infrastructure and enhancement of attractions necessary to attract tourists. Also, immigration from Latin America and Asia has altered the composition of the US population and will lead to increasing tourism demand for those areas by the late 1990s.
