… Work stress… on patient care units in general hospitals is a pressing health care issue. Work-related stressors have been linked to lowered morale, impaired performance, and high rates of absenteeism and turnover among nursing and other health care staff.1,2In a cogent review, Cartwright noted that the responsibility for acutely ill patients, the emotional climate surrounding illness, and the often perfectionistic expectation of health care staff are all implicated in staff distress.3Moreover, recent studies have shown how stressful work settings can affect the quality of health care by lowering motivation and contributing to staff “burnout”.4,5
