Abstract

IT HAS been a great honor and privilege to be president of the American Goiter Association during the past year. I have tried to serve in a manner consistent with the high standard established by the many outstanding men who have preceded me in this office. The close cooperation of all the members of the Association, particularly of the various committees, has been very gratifying. I should like to mention briefly one matter which is vitally concerned with the future of this organization. Two groups have grown up in the American Goiter Association which for simplicity may be called the older group and the younger group. The older group consists of individuals who became members early in its development. The American Association for the Study of Goiter (the original name of this organization) was founded in 1923 by 26 men, most of whom were surgeons, although there were a few internists among the group, such as Henry Plummer, who introduced iodine in the treatment of toxic goiter.
