Abstract

The Gulf of Gdansk is located in the eastern part of the Polish coast. For the purpose of this work, long term hydrological observations performed on the hydro-meteorological station Gdynia are used. The changes of mean sea level and the number of days with sea ice are analysed on the basis of observation series for the period 1946–1994. Increase in the mean sea level is found through analyses of coefficients for linear and parabolic trends. The changes in ice conditions, frequency of storm surges, as well the relationship between annual number of days with sea ice and annual number of storm surges in this part of the Polish coast are investigated. We propose that mean sea level and sea ice conditions are good indicators of climate changes in the last half century in the southern Baltic Sea, where influence of human activities is evident.
