Abstract

White mice infected with Coxsackievirus Group Bl and Group B4 develop acute pancreatitis and glucose intolerance. The structural changes involve the acinar tissue only and last for up to 30 days. Glucose intolerance persists for 6 mth returning to normal 12 mth after virus inoculation. The observations confirm the hypothesis that diabetes mellitus can occasionally follow Coxsackievirus infection but the process may be reversible.
