Abstract
Hypothyroidism, induced by the administration of thiourea and related substances has been reported to produce adrenocortical atrophy in rats (see Selye, 1950, 1951; Hartman & Brownell, 1949). A decline in adrenal weight has been noted by different investigators (Leblond & Hoff, 1944; Glock, 1945; Baumann & Marine, 1945; Zarrow & Money, 1949, and others). Baumann & Marine (1945) observed that such reduction in adrenal weight was associated with shrinkage of all the zones of the adrenal cortex while Deane & Greep (1947) found that such atrophy was confined to Zona fasciculata. There are, however, a few records of investigation where no change in adrenal weight was found. Thus Perry (1952) found no change in the weight, either absolute or relative, of the adrenals of propyl thiouracil fed rats.
