Abstract

Chancroid (also called chancre mou, soft sore, soft chancre, and ulcus molle) is a specific ulcerative disease of the genitals caused by Haemophilus ducreyi. Characteristic inguinal adenopathy often accompanies the genital lesion. Donovanosis (also called granuloma inguinale and granuloma venereum) is a chronic, progressively destructive bacterial infection of the genital region. Lymphogranuloma venereum is a systemic sexually transmitted disease that may be produced by a number of closely related Chlamydiae. Primary inoculation may occur at any anatomic site involved in intimate contact. Regional lymphadenitis develops in the nodes draining this site, and the disease disseminates further via the lymphatic system. These diseases will respond to antibiotic therapy, which should be instituted immediately in order to avoid their more serious manifestations.
