Challenges, Business Resiliency Strategies and Opportunities of Accommodation Establishments in Coron, Palawan: An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods
This study investigated the challenges, business resilience strategies, and growth opportunities of Department of Tourism (DOT)-accredited accommodation establishments in Coron, Palawan, in the post-pandemic landscape. Utilizing an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design, the research identified major operational hurdles, including equipment deterioration, fluctuating market demand, workforce deficiencies, and financial constraints. Quantitative results indicated that while challenges were significant across the sector, they were more pronounced in larger, long-standing hotels and resorts. To navigate these issues, establishments implemented highly effective resiliency strategies such as competitive digital marketing, continuous workforce upskilling, and prudent cost management. Beyond survival, the recovery period revealed substantial opportunities for business expansion, sustainable eco-friendly operations, and enhanced stakeholder engagement. The findings culminated in a business resilience framework providing a strategic blueprint for local hospitality providers to mitigate future risks and leverage emerging tourism trends for long-term sustainability.

BackgroundNowadays, nearly half of the world population lives in societies with low fertility or the below-replacement fertility. This potentially grounds the critical situation of reduction in the workforce and causes the aging of population due to an overall increase in life expectancy and standard of living. Hence, population and its transitions including the issue of fertility decline has become a topic of intense debate in the agenda-setting and policy-making processes in both the developed and developing countries. In this view, what can practically be done to respond to the fertility decline that entails effectively addressing the determinants of fertility change? In line with the literature, how people form their marriages or patterns of marriage is amongst influencing factors which potentially affect their reproductive practices as diverse societies recognize different conventions for marriage. This study is to examine women’s reproductive practices by the various patterns of marriage using the explanatory sequential mixed methods design.Methods/designThis study has an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, the follow-up explanations variant model, with two strands. This design will be implemented in two distinct phases. In the first phase, a cross-sectional quantitative study will be done using a cluster sampling strategy on 850 married women 15–49 years old living in Babol city, Iran. In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the results of the quantitative phase, researchers will implement a qualitative research in the second phase of this study. This design will provide an explanation of the quantitative research results using the qualitative evidence.DiscussionAs patterns of marriage have implications for the status of women, their health and fertility, the result of this study can provide a rich source of information for the required health-related interventions and policies are required to put the demographic changes on the right track at micro and macro level and improve the reproductive practices of women at micro level.

Dark tourism is a concept that is primarily constructed by Western values but has become a global discipline with the potential for epistemological colonisation. In response to this academic status quo, paradigm guidance is essential to the rigorous development of decolonising tourism praxis. Addressing this academic ‘pluriversal challenge’ from a non-Western perspective requires a rigorous methodological foundation. The exploratory sequential mixed-methods enable a sequential combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches to deepen the research findings by recognising the socio-cultural and political backgrounds of the actors in question. Currently, mixed methods studies in the tourism discipline are facing challenges caused by unclear research paradigms and confusing process design. In reaction, this paper examines an exploratory sequential mixed methods study of the dark tourism experience through a reflective lens. A triadic analytical lens is proposed to highlight the potential of the exploratory sequential mixed methods design to advance research decoloniality from a methodological perspective. By operationalising the three contextual research phases, the transition phases of the exploratory sequential design are emphasised and made more concrete. Meanwhile, this paper presents practical toolkits applicable to exploratory mixed methods designs and studies guided by decolonial aims.

This chapter examines the application of exploratory sequential mixed methods design in the context of small accommodation enterprises (i.e., home-stay). This study, therefore, discusses the exploratory sequential mixed methods of data collection and analysis and provides practical illustrations based on a study of small tourism enterprise sustainability practices in Ghana. The findings demonstrate that mixed methods overcome the weaknesses of a mono-method and offer an in-depth understanding of tourism and hospitality phenomena. In addition to providing a practical guide to emerging tourism scholars, the current study highlights the ability of mixed methods to develop emerging practitioners' skills in both qualitative and quantitative data. In conclusion, the exploratory sequential mixed methods design offers pragmatic data collection techniques that are non-existent in mono-methods. Accordingly, it is recommended for exploring research questions when there is limited information and high flexibility is needed.

Trucking companies may be key partners for workplace health promotion programs to improve heavy and tractor-trailer drivers' health and wellbeing. To identify barriers and facilitators to implementing workplace health promotion programs among Louisiana trucking companies' leadership and staff. A case study approach following an explanatory sequential mixed method research design was used. A quantitative survey, based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), was adapted and distributed online to a convenience sample. Survey respondents were recruited for an interview to gain additional insight on multi-level barriers to implementing workplace health promotion programs. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to describe barriers and facilitators following TDF constructs. Qualitative data were independently coded among two researchers following the TDF and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to determine themes. Eleven workplace leaders or staff took the survey. Two engaged in a follow-up interview. Regarding the quantitative results, most (82%) believed workplace health promotion programs would save their company money, although were not offering them. No TDF constructs were indicated as barriers given mixed results; however, several were facilitators: Social/Professional Role and Identity; Emotion; Action Planning; Knowledge; Motivation and Goals; and Beliefs about Consequences. Qualitative results captured several Inner (e.g., time, money) and Outer Setting contextual (e.g., truckers' needs and resources) factors considered important to trucking companies' implementation of health promotion programs. Results suggest leadership and staff of Louisiana trucking companies value workplace health promotion programs, although are challenged by limited resources and the broader trucking environment.

This study examined and explored the effects of an organizational onboarding training program on the organizational socialization and organizational commitment of recent university graduates of national origin newly hired by a Middle Eastern energy company. Organizational onboarding training influences new employees' socialization into and their attitudes toward the organization, such as their emotional attachment to the organization, known as affective commitment. Employee onboarding, organizational socialization, and organizational commitment have been shown to lead to positive outcomes for the organization, such as increased employee engagement and retention. Nevertheless, corporate onboarding training programs have not been widely examined for their effectiveness, particularly within the context of a single organization. Whereas most studies related to organizational socialization and organizational commitment rely solely on survey-based quantitative data, this study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, first collecting quantitative data and then using qualitative data to expand on the quantitative results. In the first phase of the study, online quantitative survey data were collected from onboarding training program graduates to examine their organizational socialization and organizational commitment. In the second phase of the study, audio-only online semistructured qualitative interviews with program graduates were carried out to explore the ways in which participation in the onboarding training program contributed to subjects' organizational socialization and organizational commitment. Understanding the onboarding training program's effects on the organizational socialization and organizational commitment of new employees helps training managers identify and act on the program's strengths and areas for improvement. This study also offers a unique contribution to the literature of employee onboarding, organizational socialization, and organizational commitment, as it was conducted in a company within a specific geographic region-the Middle East-in a specific economic sector-the energy industry. Its findings are useful to similar organizations seeking to implement new onboarding training programs or benchmark and improve existing onboarding training programs. Finally, this explanatory sequential mixed methods study provides researchers, practitioners, and organizations with a broader understanding of how onboarding training affects the organizational socialization and organizational commitment of new employees in different types of organizations in various sectors worldwide.

As as the Capital of West Sumatera Province and as the largest city at the West Coast of Sumatera, the City of Padang has been assigned as one of the National Activity Center for Regional Economic Development. The city will be developed as a metropolitan city, which will be very much relied on the multi sectoral support such as business, services, industry, and tourism sectors. However, the city is located at a very high-risk zone for earthquake and tsunami. After 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the city has been stricken several times by large earthquake and tsunami threat, for example in 8.4 M September 2007 and 7.6 M September 2009 causing major casualties, severe damages, great economic loss as well as tsunami threat to the people. Without disaster risk reduction based development planning, the goal of Padang as metropolitan and National Activity Center is difficult to be achieved. Knowing the level of risk and its appropriate countermeasures from the perspective of business resilience becomes very important. Thus, this paper will present the detail study on business reliency for the Padang City, starting from (i) Earthquake and Tsunami Risk Assessment from the perspective of preparedness for Business in Padang Barat Subdistrict of Padang City, (ii) Assessment of resiliency level of Padang City Business after the 2009 event, and (iii) recommendation for considering the Business Resilience factors as part of DRR based CBD development Plan of Padang Barat sub district - Padang City. This study is not only able to identify physical and nonphusical aspect of business characteristic, but it has identified four major components of Bussiness Resiliency Indicators, i.e. Swift Recovery Factors (RR), Experience and Knowledge to Disaster (PP), Emergency Response Plan (RT) and Asset Protection (PA). Each major indicator consists of several indicators, with 19 total indicators. Further investigation on these indicators shown that total performance value of business resiliency is 65,36%, which means that Small, Micro and Medium Business in Padang City are resilient toward earthquake and tsunami. Some indicators show their performance value below minimum limit of 55%. Such as 48.84% for Knowledge and Experience to Disaster (PP) which comprised of several low knowledge and low preparedness among business, has led to the need for an intensive and extensive public education program for business community. While the low performance value of Assett Protection indicators has been influenced by the low performance value of insurance, i.e. 42,22% below minimum limit, meaning that a government intervention to promote risk transfer mechanism via insurance is needed. Among the four major components of Bussiness Resiliency Indicators, the component of Asset Protection Indicators (PA) shows the strongest correlation with non-physical aspects of business characteristic, i.e. the length of business and omzet. The performance value of the 19 Business Resiliency factors and its correlation with physical and nonphysical business characteristics are very important to be considered in improving CBD development plan as part of city zoning in order to achieved a resilience central business districts (CBD).

The Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model was adapted for hypertension education of community health extension workers in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria, and delivered as a 7-part series. This study aims to evaluate implementation outcomes of the hypertension ECHO series mapped to the first 3 levels of the Kirkpatrick model. Outcomes included reach, appropriateness (level 1), effectiveness (level 2), and penetration (level 3). From August 2022 to April 2023, 7 hypertension ECHO sessions were delivered via Zoom (Zoom Video Communications, Inc) to a health care worker audience including targeted community health extension workers at 12 primary health centers (PHCs) in the Hypertension Treatment in Nigeria Program. Health care workers provided demographic information, engaged in pre- and postsession knowledge quizzes, and shared feedback during live sessions. Surveys were sent to health care workers at 12 PHCs approximately 1 month after each session to ask about the use of the presented material and focus group discussions were performed with these health care workers after the ECHO program concluded. Qualitative and quantitative results were evaluated using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design wherein qualitative data were used to help explain outcomes and variability among participants. Across 7 ECHO sessions, a total of 1407 live participants were documented. Participants largely found the program was acceptable, with more than 97% of respondents reporting that the session was useful. Postsession knowledge scores increased (range: 2.3%-10.5%) relative to presession scores demonstrating moderate effectiveness. Among 12 PHCs, most (more than 70%) health care workers applied information learned in each session to provide patient care. In 6 focus group discussions, with 31 health care workers (n=15; 48% community health extension workers), participants reported that network connectivity and clinical demands were barriers to live participation and expressed preferences for blended training and asynchronous resources. Results show that a hypertension ECHO program adapted for community health extension workers effectively increased knowledge among participants and was useful to a majority. Insights gained may inform the scaling of remote hypertension education programs for community health extension workers in similar settings. The purpose of this paper is to critically explore the sequential explanatory mixed method research design and how it can enhance our understanding of pain management. The general prevalence of pain after surgery has not changed significantly over several decades despite the widespread introduction of new pain relieving technologies. The majority of postoperative pain studies use quantitative methods which offer little understanding of the underlying processes of care. Understanding can be illuminated by using an explanatory mixed method research design. Discursive paper. This paper focuses on the methodological considerations when using a mixed method design. Two previously published mixed methods studies illustrate how findings can inform practice. In the first, 85 women undergoing surgery completed questionnaires to measure pain, anxiety and depression. Telephone interviews explored their pain experiences. The second study considered frequency and patterns of anxiety in the immediate pre and postoperative period. Semi-structured telephone interviews, identified contributing events/situations amenable to nursing intervention. Reasons for growing popularity, criticisms, paradigmatic considerations and epistemological roots of pragmatism are explored. The two explanatory mixed method studies provide examples of these studies and how 'inferences' from quantitative and qualitative data can inform practice. This paper connects quantitative and qualitative data, drawing on two research studies, to give greater understanding to the management of pain. Knowledge of the processes responsible for inadequate pain management can be illuminated by using explanatory mixed methods research designs. Nursing requires knowledge which reflects the complexity of human health. The explanatory mixed method study can elucidate the problem under scrutiny, e.g. prevalence of pain or anxiety. The qualitative phase can generates an understanding of contributing factors and insights for care delivery. The implicit desire to change and influence practice makes it relevant for those closely aligned to practice.
