Abstract

The high-temperature radical polymerization of methylmethacrylate, initiated by tert.-butylperbenzoate in the presence of a number of aliphatic mercaptans, has been studied. The transfer constants to the monomer and to the mercapto-compound have been determined. The introduction of mercaptans has hardly any effect on the rate of the process in the initial stages but it substantially alters the characteristics of the polymerization at high degrees of conversion.
