Abstract

Three hundred and twenty-seven cesarean hysterectomies performed at the City of Memphis Hospitals from 1954 through 1967 are reported. Complications are found to be more than with cesarean section and tubal ligation. Nearly all urinary tract injuries and fistulas occur when total cesarean hysterectomy is performed after previous cesarean section. Subtotal cesarean hysterectomy is probably safer in these patients. There was one maternal mortality. For carefully selected patients operated upon by well-trained obstetricians, it may be the procedure of choice for sterilization at cesarean section. It is 100 per cent effective as a sterilization procedure but is associated with slightly more mortality and morbidity than cesarean section and tubal ligation.
