Abstract
Dedicated to the memory of Edwin J. Wylie, pioneer vascular surgeon,<i>Cerebrovascular Insufficiency</i>is a compilation of presentations of the contributing faculty at the most recent Northwestern University (Chicago) postgraduate course in vascular surgery. This text contains 38 chapters by 75 authors and provides a comprehensive review of the stroke problem. The contents can be divided into eight parts, which include (1) the history of carotid surgery; (2) the basic aspects of atherosclerosis and pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia; (3) radiologic and noninvasive diagnostic studies; (4) surgical management of carotid, vertebral brachiocephalic, and intracranial arterial lesions; (5) specialized intraoperative management techniques such as shunting and evaluation of cerebral blood flow; (6) unusual problems in extracranial vascular disease such as fibromuscular disease, arteritis, and simultaneous carotid and coronary disease; (7) neurologic and hypertensive complications following carotid surgery; and (8) long-term results following carotid endarterectomy.
