Abstract

Perhaps a key indicator of feminism’s renewed popularity and heightened visibility within popular culture is the phenomenon of celebrity feminism. Yet the ease with which such forms of feminism can be coopted into a postfeminist neoliberal discourse, supporting notions of meritocracy and promoting individual successes over collective action, has left celebrity feminism open to criticism. Through addressing examples such as Caitlin Moran, Lena Dunham, and Emma Watson, and the varying forms of feminist success they imbue, this chapter explores the debates surrounding the role of celebrity feminism in either promoting or undermining the fourth wave.
