This article encourages nurses to explore leadership in district nursing practice and community teams. The challenges faced by district nurses are discussed in relation to the current health policy agenda in Wales and the increasingly complex care demands being placed on district nursing services because of the aging population and the rise in numbers of individuals living longer with multiple long-term health conditions. The concept of compassionate leadership is presented and discussed using a case study approach. The article explores compassionate leadership in the context of caring for a patient with a complex malignant wound needing palliative care. A framework for practice is developed to illustrate compassionate leadership in action to meet the needs of both the team and of the nurses delivering person-centred care.

This discursive paper draws on three key leadership theories with the aim of outlining how styles of leadership impact the provision of fundamentals of care. Discussion paper. key leadership theories, leadership and fundamentals of care literature. The conceptualization of fundamentals of care is viewed through the lens of nursing leadership, and collective, compassionate and transformational leadership theory. The cognitive dissonance that nursing leaders encounter when trying to reconcile organizational, patient and nurses' needs is considered, and the pressure to deliver high-quality fundamentals of care presents a challenge to nurse leaders. Leaders must align nursing and patient outcome data to drive forward and prioritize fundamental care. Focusing on key elements of relational leadership styles will ensure a workforce fit to provide fundamental care, which in the current climate must be an organizational and global nursing priority. This discussion attempts to draw together overlapping leadership theories, emphasizes the importance of relational leadership in ensuring the provision of the fundamentals of care and acknowledged the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses and nursing care, with leadership implications outlined, such as a need for role-modelling, understanding shared values and giving nurses a voice. It will have an impact on nurse leaders, but also on those nurses providing direct care by issuing a challenge for them to confront their own nurse leaders, and to ask that they better resolve competing needs of both the nursing workforce and patients.

AimThe aim of this study is to investigate how intensive and emergency nurses rated the adequacy of compassionate leadership during the early stages of the Covid‐19 pandemic.BackgroundThe pandemic has resulted in nurses' increased stress and need for compassion from leaders. Compassionate leadership is here defined as a number of leadership practices based on altruistic values and emotional intelligence.MethodThis is a quantitative descriptive cross‐sectional study based on a questionnaire for 50 intensive and emergency care nurses in a central hospital in Finland.ResultsThe pandemic had increased nurses' need for compassion, but their needs for support had not been met and their strengths and competence appreciated sufficiently. They agreed that compassionate leadership could be developed through experience and personal development rather than through education.ConclusionCompassionate leadership is a process that involves a number of leadership practices based on altruistic values and emotional intelligence and benefits from recognition and use of employee strengths. Leaders and employees could benefit from simulation‐based learning, work supervision and discussion led by external facilitators.Implications for Nursing ManagementCompassionate leadership involves approachability, genuine presence and listening, which could be developed through work‐based learning combined with reflection.

Nurses are on a lifelong learning journey. The Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions Core Curriculum for the Continuing Professional Development of Nurses Working in Cardiovascular Settings provides a ‘map’ to guide learning. Although there are challenges in defining what a clinical nurse specialist and advanced nurse practitioner are, advanced nursing practice must be ‘grounded in direct care or clinical work’ and requires additional and ongoing education beyond initial qualification. Continuing professional development is essential to increase skills, and is widely endorsed as an essential part of every nurse’s role. It is therefore critical that we work together as a team to best deliver patient- and family-centred care. Nurses exist as part of a skilled transdisciplinary team which is fostered by mutual trust, positive working relationships, and clear roles and responsibilities. Learning in, and on, practice is an important part of professional development. Skilled reflection is important for nurse leaders, who need to be able to reflect on how a team works together to improve patient- and family-centred care. Developing new nursing leaders is critical to the future success of healthcare. It is important for nursing staff at all levels to build effective nursing leadership skills such as team leadership and compassionate leadership, among others, for better clinical care and patient safety outcomes every day in nursing practice. Professional societies and associations such as the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions provide an important support for lifelong learning and development of core skills.
