Abstract

On the 24th of February 2022, the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation began. The purpose of this chapter is to present Russia’s military goals and their changes over time, taking into account the priorities set by its decision-makers. Objectives in the ongoing military conflict can be divided into strategic and tactical. The first ones, which include occupation of territory, destroying and preventing Ukraine from functioning as a state remain unchanged. The other ones – tactical objectives concern the actions of the Russian Federation in the field. Their achievements (e.g. occupation of territory, destruction of the enemy’s infrastructure) influence the implementation of strategic goals. In addition to the changes in the objectives of the Russian invasion and the events that took place during it, the historical background, geopolitical perspective, the situation that has taken place since 2014 with the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the conclusions of the ongoing armed conflict are also presented.
