A Guide for Writing a Critical Book Review; Reviewing Translation as Problems and Solutions: A Textbook for University Students and Trainee Translators by Professor Hasan Ghazala as a case study
  • Jan 1, 2018
  • المجلة الليبية العالمية
  • Khaled Mahmoud Saleh Abdulsalam

This paper studies critical book reviews from two perspectives: theoretical and practical. The paper as a whole is divided into two main sections. The first section studies the theoretical part of critical book reviews, what a critical review is, how it differs from a book report or a book summary and how it should be structured. The second section studies critical book reviews from the practical perspective. In other words, it is an application of the supposed structure of a standardized critical review explained in section one on writing a critical review to the book Translation as Problems and Solutions: A Textbook for University Students and Trainee Translators by Professor Hasan Ghazala.

The effectiveness of community-based occupational therapy education and functional training programs for older adults: a critical literature review.
  • Oct 1, 2003
  • Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy
  • Seanne Wilkins + 4 more

This paper examines the results of a critical literature review describing the provision of education and functional training programs by occupational therapists with older adults to maximize their occupational performance. The critical review addressed the following question: What is the effectiveness of education and functional training programs in improving occupational performance and quality of life for older adults? Review methods are described and the outcomes of the critical review discussed. The results indicate that there is evidence that programs are effective in three areas: prevention of functional decline and falls, stroke and rheumatoid arthritis. Methodological limitations exist in some studies. There are several randomized controlled studies in this area, though the description of specific occupational therapy interventions is often vague and the programs could not be easily duplicated by occupational therapists. Occupational therapists are provided with information through this critical review to facilitate evidence-based practice when working with older adults.

Investigating the Effects of Textual Reviews From Consumers and Critics on Movie Sales
  • Sep 10, 2019
  • SSRN Electronic Journal
  • Tianjie Deng

In this study, we investigate the sales impact of different types of online word-of-mouth (WOM) based on their source (user versus critic) and form (structured versus unstructured). We propose a model by adopting the heuristic-systematic perspective and empirically test it using online movie reviews collected from Rotten Tomatoes, a review-aggregation website for film and television. We construct a unique dataset that matches critic reviews and user reviews, with metadata such as weekly box-office sales and weekly advertisement spending for 90 movies released in the U.S in 2014. In addition, we use a text-mining method to extract valuable sentiment information from the textual contents of both user and critic reviews. This dataset allows us to compare the box-office responsiveness of four types of reviews: user numeric ratings, user text reviews, critic numeric ratings, and critic text reviews. The results reveal that critic reviews and user reviews influence sales through different forms: while user reviews impact sales through their aggregate numeric ratings, critic reviews exert their impact through textual narratives. Our study provides managerial implications to businesses on how to allocate their resources on different social media-related marketing strategies to lift sales.

Accident and emergency staff opinion on the effects of family presence during adult resuscitation: critical literature review
  • Jan 24, 2008
  • Journal of Advanced Nursing
  • Wendy Walker

This paper is a report of a critical literature review to identify the positive and negative effects of family presence during adult resuscitation, as perceived by accident and emergency healthcare staff based in primary (out-of-hospital) and secondary (in-hospital) environments of care. The controversial practice of family presence during resuscitation of adults has stimulated debate over the past two decades, giving rise to a growing body of literature and the development of clinical guidelines for practice. A search was carried out for the period 1987-2007 using the Science Direct, CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, psychINFO and BNI databases and the search terms resuscitation, witnessed resuscitation, family presence, relatives' presence, attitudes and opinions and accident and emergency. Eighteen studies were included in the critical review, primarily comprising retrospective survey research. The majority of studies were descriptive in design. A standardized approach to the appraisal process was achieved through the utilization of guidelines for critiquing self-reports. The findings revealed that accident and emergency healthcare staff perceive both positive and negative effects as a consequence of family presence during adult resuscitation and their opinions suggest that there are more risks than benefit. Further research is essential if family presence during resuscitation of adults is to be better defined and understood. Qualitative methods of enquiry are recommended as a way of gaining a deeper insight into and understanding of this practice.

Synergy of tourism and agriculture in increasing the exchange rate of farmers in Tabanan District: a critical review
  • Dec 28, 2022
  • International Journal of Applied Sciences in Tourism and Events
  • Bagus Arya Kusuma + 2 more

This study aims to analyze the synergy between tourism and agriculture to increase the exchange rate of farmers in the Tabanan Regency area. A literature review approach with a focus on critical review was used in this study. Based on previous research, the study looked at how the Tabanan district's policies affect how tourism and farming work together. The components analyzed are the rationalization and realization of policy implementation related to the analyzed review. This research is a critical literature review to assess, compare, and compile strategy characteristics. The results obtained from the synergy between tourism and agriculture in Tabanan Regency have the potential to be implemented to increase the farmer exchange rate. The idea of mutualism between the two sectors is expected to help tourist villages grow. Improving the size and quality of tourist villages, with the help of local governments, will lead to changes affecting farmers' incomes and exchange rates. They will be able to see the well-being of their farmers. Factors that must be realized to make this synergy concept a success include: 1) the Tabanan Regency Government can facilitate the development of tourist villages; 2) farmers are expected to be open to accepting synergy models of work with the tourism sector, and 3) tourism actors assist farmers in identifying local potentials that have economic value. The policy will likely lead to more and better tourist villages, raising farmers' exchange rates and improving their lives. In conclusion, combining tourism and agriculture makes much sense. The rationalization of policies that local governments and farmers work on can help increase farmers' exchange rates locally and regionally.

How Compatible Are SDGs with Divine Principles? A Critical Literature Review (CLR)
  • Jan 1, 2021
  • T O Yusuf + 1 more

Islam is described by Allah as the most standard creed (Din-ul-Qayyimah) because its divine principles are eternally consistent for achieving global peace, human progress, economic growth, and sustainable development. This chapter discusses the compatibility of SDGs with divine principles of Islam using a qualitative research method. The required pieces of information sourced from Qur’an, Hadith, online resources and scholarly articles were subjected to critical literature review (CLR). After a critical review, it was found that the seventeen (17) SDGs of the United Nations are compatible with the five (5) thematic objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shariah), namely: (i) preservation of religion, (ii) preservation of life, (iii) preservation of intellect, (iv) preservation of progeny, and (v) preservation of wealth. The chapter concludes, recommending that the ideals of SDGs should be adopted, implemented, and monitored by all member countries of the United Nations for the betterment of this world and the hereafter as well. Two practical/managerial implications emerged. Firstly, discussing the compatibility of SDGs drawing evidences from the Qur’an and Hadith has provided theological foundation for SDGs as Shari’ah-compliant ideals. Secondly, the evidence-based justification would strengthen adoption and compliance with the SDGs by Muslim nations and policymakers because the sustainable development ideals of the United Nations have been situated within the realm of Maqasid al-Shariah (Objectives of Islamic law). This supports the theory of Islamic Revivalism and Maududian Affirmative Islamic Revivalism. The suggestion for the future is for researchers to carry out an empirical investigation on the compatibility of SDGs with the divine principles of Islam.

A critical review of gender issues in understanding prolonged disability related to musculoskeletal pain: how are they relevant to rehabilitation?
  • Dec 2, 2009
  • Disability and Rehabilitation
  • Daniel Côté + 1 more

Purpose. The purpose of this critical review is to describe the available theoretical models for understanding the gender issues in prolonged work disability related to persistent musculoskeletal (MSK) pain.Method. A critical literature review was conducted in medicine, health sciences, and social sciences databases (MEDLINE, CINHAL, PsychINFO and SOCINDEX) using specific keywords. After screening titles and abstracts, followed by methodological quality assessment, a total of 55 references were retained for content analysis.Results. Gender issues in disability related to persistent MSK pain show that men and women may experience pain and rehabilitation process in different ways. Three main themes were exftracted and further described: (1) the experience of distrust; (2) the self-identity process; and (3) the domestic strain. Each of these themes has a specific and potentially different impact on men and women, and we report that experiential differences may strongly impact the rehabilitation process and outcomes such as return to work.Conclusions. This critical review provides insight into gender issues in the process of rehabilitation and outcomes such as return to work. We suggest that work and family considerations are the two most important issues in the rehabilitation process and that differences between men and women are likely to occur.

The current understanding of knowledge management concepts: A critical review
  • Sep 28, 2020
  • Medical Journal of the Islamic Republic of Iran
  • Shahram Yazdani + 2 more

Background: Higher education institutions include experts who are knowledgeable. Knowledge management facilitates institutions to enhance the capacity to collect information and knowledge and apply it to problem-solving and decision making. Through the review of related studies, we observed that there are multiple concepts and terms in the field of knowledge management. Thus, the complexity and variety of these concepts and definitions must be clarified. Considering the importance of clarifying these concepts for utilization by users, this study aimed to examine the concepts related to this filed. Methods: The methodology used in this study was based on the Carnwell and Daly's critical review method. An extensive search was carried out on various databases and libraries. A critical and profound review was carried out on selected articles. Many wandering concepts were found. Identified concepts were classified into seven categories based on conceptual proximity. Existing definitions and evidence in relation to extracted concepts were criticized and synthesized. The definitional attributes for them were identified and a conceptual identity card was provided for each of the concepts. Results: Thirty-seven concepts with the most relevance to the field of knowledge management were extracted. There was no clear boundary among them, and they wandered. To avoid more confusion, concepts were classified according to semantic relation. Eight categories were created; each category consisted of a mother concept and several other concepts with similarity and proximity to the meaning of the original concept. Their attributes have been identified, and finally, each of them was presented in the form of a conceptual identity card. Conclusion: Through critically reviewing the literature in this field, we were able to identify the concepts and realize their attributes. In this way, we came to a new interpretation of the concepts. At the end of the study, we concluded that some of the concepts have not been properly defined and are not properly located in the knowledge management field; also their application is uncertain.

The Climate Change–Terrorism Nexus: A Critical Literature Review
  • May 31, 2022
  • Terrorism and Political Violence
  • Stefanie Mavrakou + 3 more

A growing number of policymakers around the world have recognized climate change as an escalating security threat and increasingly point to the climate change—terrorism nexus in particular. This critical literature review provides an analysis of the current state of research on the causal and correlative links between climate change, intermediary factors—such as resource scarcity, loss of economic opportunities, and instability—and terrorism in sub-Saharan Africa. Moving beyond a review of substantive themes within the existing body of scholarly research examining this topic, this article critically evaluates the theories, assumptions, and methods behind the literature. In doing so, the review identifies noteworthy trends, as well as gaps and shortcomings in the current research. Our review finds that the majority of the literature has observed a positive correlation between climate change and terrorism. More precisely, the current body of research overwhelmingly assesses that climate change indirectly leads to terrorism via its impact on conditions often considered to be drivers of terrorism in sub-Saharan Africa. Still, gaps remain in empirically backing up these assertions and examining the relationship between climate change, intermediary factors, and terrorism in more depth. We use our critical review and analysis to guide recommendations for further research into this emerging and timely field of study.

  • Adisthy Shabrina Nurqamarani + 2 more

Background: Technology acceptance model (TAM) has been extensively used to analyse user acceptance of technologies adopted by enterprises at different levels. Moreover, the technology adoption has drawn attention among practitioners and academic communities alike, leading to the development of approaches to understand the concept. However, there is a degree of inconsistency found in previous studies on different types of TAM models used in explaining user acceptance of technologies among small-medium enterprises (SMEs).Objective: This critical literature review aims to synthesise the technology adoption scholarly studies using TAM. It is expected to aid the identification of the most relevant factors influencing SMEs in adopting technology. Additionally, analysing the variations of TAM developed in previous studies could provide suggested variables specific to the type of technology industry. Methods: An integrated approach was used, and this involves a review of articles on the adoption of technologies in SMEs from 2011 to 2021, retrieved from popular databases using a mixture of keywords such as technology acceptance model (TAM), technology adoption, and technology adoption in SMEs.Results: An overview of TAM studies on user acceptance of technology in this review covers a wide range of research areas from financial technology to human resource management-related technology. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were discovered to be the most common factors in TAM from the 21 articles reviewed. Meanwhile, some other variables were observed such as context, type of technology and level of user experience. Conclusion: The review highlights key trends in previous studies on IT adoption in SMEs, which assist researchers and developers in understanding the most relevant factors and suitable TAM models in determining user acceptance in a particular field.
