Abstract

Rubidium atoms, prepared in Ryberg states of principal quantum numbers n in the range 20 to 35 and then sent between two perfectly reflecting parallel mirrors, suffer energy level shifts that may be measurable now. The results of a calculation of these shifts is presented here, based upon the theory advanced recently by Barton. For the level 30 S, for example, we report an energy shift of Δ=61 Hz.
