Abstract

The flow induced by an isolated spherical drop or bubble which performs translational harmonic oscillations relative to the liquid in which it is embedded is considered. Special attention is focused upon the steady or microstreaming which is induced. Except in very diffuse situations associated, for example, with liquids of high viscosity, the streaming is shown to be weaker than for a corresponding rigid body. Qualitative agreement is obtained between the theory and available experimental results.
