Abstract

Caveolins sequester FA on the cytoplasmic leaflet of the plasma membrane, augment triglyceride formation, and protect cells from lipotoxicity

Highlights

  • Ectopic expression of caveolin-1 in HEK293 cells enhances FA sequestration in membranes as measured by a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye [1]

  • We proposed a mechanistic model whereby caveolin-1 at the inner leaflet of the bilayer enhances the amount of FA anions at this locus by virtue of its multiple positive charges, in the C terminus region, which is expected to lie close to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane [1]

  • Dysregulation of adipocyte lipid metabolism leading to chronically elevated levels of free FA is a major contributor to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes [21]

Summary

Introduction

Ectopic expression of caveolin-1 in HEK293 cells enhances FA sequestration in membranes as measured by a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye [1]. We show that expression of caveolin-1 and 3 enhance TG storage and protect HEK293 cells from the cytotoxic effects of high FA concentrations.
