Abstract

Congenital abnormalities lime received more attention in recent years due to the thalidomide tragedy and the decline in infant mortality front other sources such as infectious and nutritional diseases. The etiology of birth defects is far from understood, but the involvement of hereditary and environmental factors is widely recognized. More than 65 percent of all abnormalities are caused by unknown influences and only 5–9 percent have been attributed to proven environmental factors. Prenatal diagnosis of birth defects is becoming possible with further developments in the techniques of amniocentesis, sonography, amniography, fetography, and actual visualization of the fetus in utero.
