Abstract
We discuss relations between the catenary property and geometrically normal formal fibers. We present for each integer n ≥ 2 an example of a catenary Noetherian local integral domain of dimension n which has geometrically regular formal fibers and is not universally catenary. These examples are obtained by means of a construction developed in our previous articles which uses power series rings, homomorphic images and intersections.
