Abstract

This study reports the case of a 78-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension, having her first eye exam because of progressive bilateral blurred vision. Best visual acuity was 4/10th in both eyes. Biomicroscopy showed common nuclear cataract in the right eye and Christmas tree cataract in the left eye. This form of adult cataract is rare and is characterized by small, reflective, polychromatic, needle-shaped deposits in the deep cortex and nucleus. These deposits consist of cysteine, one of the least soluble amino acids. This cataract is often related to age and is said to be different from polychromatic cataract, associated with type 1 myotonic dystrophy, in which the particles are smaller.
