Abstract

Gold catalysts have rapidly become a hot topic in chemistry due to their potential applicability to catalyze many reactions. This chapter provides the latest advances in catalysis research. Several preparation methods to obtain gold nanoparticles with diameters below 10 nm on supports were summarized. We focus on the CO oxidation reaction with gold catalysts, especially the studies about reaction mechanisms which can enhance the understanding of the oxidation process. The gold catalysts have also been investigated for the oxidation and reduction of various organic compounds. These works are also highlighted in this chapter. On the other hand, gold has been doped on semiconductor photocatalysts to enhance their visible-light activity. Indeed, such modification is able to improve the performance of the photocatalysts. However, the function of the gold nanoparticles was not realized correctly. Under light irradiation gold nanoparticles dispersed on oxide supports can exhibit significant activity for oxidation of organic compounds, due to the fact that the surface-plasmon resonance effect can heat gold nanoparticles up quickly and may induce the electron transfer required for redox reactions, or allow gold nanoparticles to mediate the electron transfer. The photocatalysis with gold is a new direction for both gold catalysts and photocatalysis.
