Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of a video story-based intervention with self-modeling to decrease spitting behavior in a female pre-school student with autism during an extended school year services program. An A-B-A-B design was used to demonstrate a functional relation between a video story-based intervention with self-modeling and decreased spitting behavior. The results showed that spitting behavior decreased as a result of the video-based intervention package. The implications of these results will be explored.

Highlights

  • Western Europe, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Korea, and the Middle East, have all reported a rise in the incidence of Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the challenges associated with accessing care [2,3,4]

  • Researchers have shown that visual cues and prompts, such as those used in story-based interventions can enhance learning for these individuals [5,6,7,8]

Summary

Introduction

[1]. Story-based interventions provide social prompts, cues, and responses in specific situations, including answers to the questions of who, what, when, where and why in order to enhance perspective taking [12]. Researchers and practitioners have demonstrated successful use of story-based interventions for specific incidences of behavior, including aggression, screaming, grabbing toys, transitioning, sitting in a group, greeting others, improving manners, and increasing overall social engagement. The authors conducted a search of major academic databases (e.g., Psych INFO, Psych ARTICLES, ERIC, Educational Research Complete, and Academic Search Premier) using combinations of the following terms: social story, story-based The aim of the present study was evaluate the effectiveness of a story-based intervention to reduce a high frequency and anti-social spitting behavior by promoting an incompatible alternative behavior
