Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist, within the first 6 h postpartum in Holstein cows on serum Ca concentrations. Six hours after parturition and first milking, cows were assigned randomly to receive (i.v.) either saline (n = 6) or 0.01 mg/kg of BW of naloxone (n = 6). Blood samples were collected at 10 min intervals from 10 min before until 50 min after treatments. Mean serum Ca was not different (P > 0.05) between groups before treatments. Naloxone caused a transient increase (P < 0.05) in serum Ca concentrations within 20 min after bolus administration. Mean serum Ca was not altered (P = 0.30) in saline-treated cows. The results provide evidence that endogenous opioid peptides play a role in Ca homeostasis, and that their action is mediated through opioid receptors.
