Abstract

The third case study is an experimental and numerical investigation of a web frame corner predominantly subjected to bending. The highest structural hot-spot stress has been found at the cruciform joint of the flange, however, the first fatigue crack occurred in component tests at the end of a cope hole arranged behind the cruciform joint for welding reasons. This seems to be caused by different radii at the weld toe. Taking the crack penetration through the flange as failure criterion, the fatigue strength can be well assessed by the structural hot-spot stress approach, whereas the nominal stress approach is unconservative due to the high stress increase caused by the structural configuration.
