Abstract

A common condition of skin eruption, lacerations, etc. associated often with broken or hemorrhagic feather shafts occurring on the thigh of broilers is thought possibly to be related to a common but undescribed condition of femoral degeneration. The proximal end of the femur separates at the epiphysis exposing a truncated, degenerate bone shaft which may be pitted or subject to osteolysis. The former condition is thought to be due to self picking. The two conditions are thought to be related since the self picking occurs in the area of bone degenerative changes and birds may be picking themselves in an effort to relieve local irritation.
