Abstract
ABSTRACT Joseph Carens’s model of market socialism is widely influential and has been called the “Platonic ideal” of market socialism. This paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of the Carensian model. It argues that although Carensian market socialism remains a powerful vision for the future, there are important questions to be asked in term’s of one’s obligation to work, as well as the appropriate role of moral versus financial incentives in an egalitarian society.
