Abstract

Based on theoretical considerations of insecurity in work domain and career developmental theories, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the concept of career insecurity. Across multiple studies and samples, applying qualitative and quantitative research designs, we (a) clarified the multidimensional nature of career insecurity (MU-CI-S), (b) developed and validated a new scale to measure different career insecurity dimensions, and (c) investigated the nomological network of career insecurity. Across all studies and results, the MU-CIS-S showed high levels of construct validity and excellent psychometric properties. Moreover, incremental validity beyond related concepts (e.g., job insecurity and perceived employability), a one-dimensional career insecurity scale, and stable individual differences – when predicting the important outcome variables of well-being and health, career success, and job and career attitudes and behaviors–were found.
