Abstract
Epidural analgesia can provide effective, safe, short-term pain management for patients after undergoing surgical procedures. There is robust, high-quality evidence supporting the use of epidural analgesia to manage pain in critically ill patients who have had major thoracic and abdominal surgeries, or are at risk for cardiac and pulmonary complications, or persistent ileus.1,2 However, complications may occur with this mode of analgesia, especially in the critically ill patient, requiring specific assessment and knowledge for the perianesthesia nurse.
