Abstract

Cardioprotective activity of A.V. Circulo, a polyherbal preparation, was evaluated in isoproterenol induced myocardial damage in rats. Chronic prophylactic treatment with A.V. Circulo prevented an increase in serum lysosomal enzyme activity of creatinine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and serum glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase in the blood due to isoproterenol administration. A.V. Circulo treatment also significantly inhibited increases in DNA and protein content in heart tissue as well as elevated serum lipid levels after isoproterenol administration. Treatment was also able to inhibit the isoproterenol induced increase in heart weight to body weight ratio. Pretreatment with the polyherbal restored the altered architectural changes in the histology of myocardium, due to isoproterenol administration. All findings, including biological, biochemical, and histopathological indicate that A.V. Circulo treatment chronically protected the cardiac injury.
