Abstract

The review article by Petri et al. stresses the need of pre-symptomatic screening for arrhythmia and heart failure in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (MD1) [1]. The authors propose to screen every patient by ECG, 48-hour Holter monitoring and transthoracic echocardiography at the time of diagnosis. Follow-up in asymptomatic patients should be performed by ECG and Holter monitoring every second year and by transthoracic echocardiography every third year. Patients with symptoms suggestive of arrhythmia should undergo event monitoring and possibly invasive electrophysiological studies.
