Abstract

AbstractThe article describes in detail the six cantilever piers built for shipping iron ore in the final years of the nineteenth century in a small area of the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain. The ore loading systems used earlier in northern Spain are first considered, together with the particular topographical features of this section of the Cantabrian coast which made it expedient to adopt the technology of the cantilever pier rather than piled piers. The evolution of the original Belgian designs to suit this location is described and their adoption by a Spanish construction company discussed.
