Abstract
With over one third of the UK population at risk of developing some form of cancer during their lifetime, the need for a better understanding of how cancer is caused and develops is evident. This necessity has presumably underlined the recent launch of the National Cancer Research Institute and Network schemes by the UK government. The Institute – the first of its kind in the UK to focus on a specific disease – will oversee and coordinate the research activities of all existing cancer research councils and institutes, health departments and pharmaceutical companies. Furthermore, the National Cancer Research Network aims to expand the number of patients in clinical trials to improve the availability of disease statistics and to recruit additional specialist staff. It is hoped that these initiatives and the concomitant funding will promote more intensive research into cancer and the advancement of effective medicines for this disease. DC
