Abstract
Irvine Page, MD, has made a strong and convincing plea for ecumenism in medicine and science. 1 He has voiced a concern that most physicians share: that government control of medicine and science will lead to a decline in the quality and the slowing of the progress in these fields of endeavor. Page declares that if the scientific community will unite, will not permit petty self-interests to divide it, and will speak with one voice, then it can deal with the political pressures that now are eroding away its power base and self-determination.
