Abstract

Crime as it relates to institutions of higher education (e.g., colleges and universities) can be broken down into a few thematic areas: student victimization, student safety, illicit drug use and underage drinking by college students, and to a lesser extent, crime by students. Since the late 1980s and early 1990s, scores of research have been done to examine the true nature of crime and victimization on campus. While research continues to show that campuses are safe places, isolated cases of extreme violence have tended to shape policies dealing with campus crime. Issues of crime by and victimization of college students tend to be ignored or underresearched and underreported because they exist off campus. This entry describes the current knowledge of these topics and elaborates on current trends on campus crime by reflecting on recent research.
