Abstract

A method of calculation of maximum arc energy was presented to assess the arcing fault damage. Arc model was improved for the calculation of arc energy in low-voltage power systems. The model was expressed as differential equation. Arc voltages in the model were determined with probability method based on a large number of three-phase arcing fault tests. The arc currents and arc energy were determined from differential equation. Two examples served to illustrate the calculation of arc energy. The examples show that the maximum arc energy depends primarily on arc voltage and bolted fault current. The method involves the stochastic characteristics of the fault arcs. It can be used easily to calculate the maximum arc energy in low-voltage power systems to minimize arcing fault damage
