Abstract

This paper investigates the calculation of circuit breaker transient recovery voltages for the Vietnam 500 kV power system. Several events that can produce high transient recovery voltage levels on the 500 kV line breakers are studied, such as three-phase-to-ground, phase-to-phase grounded, phase-to-phase ungrounded and phase-to-ground fault clearing. The series capacitors protected by varistors, used on the Vietnam 500 kV system, play an important role to increase the TRVs across line circuit breakers when clearing fault currents. The influence of fault location on TRV is investigated. Several measures in order to reduce the TRVs are examined.
