Abstract

The Bethe stopping cross section of diamond, Si and Ge for protons has been calculated using the kinetic theory of stopping and valence electron momentum densities derived from experimental Compton profiles. Trends along the isovalent, isostructural series are discussed, and comparison with experimental stopping cross sections lead to mean excitation energies of the order I(Ge) = 310 eV, I(Si) = 173 eV and I(diamond) = 96 eV. It is also shown that care should be exercized when using graphite data for des the stopping of diamond.
