Abstract

A potentiometric titration method was used to study nitrate assimilation and photosynthetic carbon uptake in suspensions of the green alga Scenedesmus obliquus. CO 2 with a known partial pressure was bubbled continuously through the system, and photosynthesis and nitrate assimilation were calculated from changes in pH and alkalinity. The inhibitory effect on these processes caused by the free Cd 2+-ion as well as by Cd(II) in complex with Cl − and with the organic chelator EDTA was further studied. In short term experiments Cd-toxicity was found to increase in the series Cd(EDTA) 2− < CdCl + < Cd 2+_. Photosynthesis was less inhibited than nitrate assimilation at [Cd(II)] < 10 −6 M.
