Abstract

SummaryLevels of CA125 were measured in maternal serum and matched samples of amniotic fluid and extraembryonic coelomic fluid obtained by transvaginal ultrasound guided amniocentesis from 22 women 8 to i 12 weeks pregnant. The levels of CA 125 were much higher in amniotic fluid (median 496u/ml; range 207–1285 u/ml) than in extra-embryonic coelomic fluid (median 35 u/ml; range < 35–239 u/ml; P < 0–0001; Mann-Whitney U test) and maternal serum (median 35 u/ml; range < 35–70 u/ml; P < 0–0001). There was a linear correlation between gestational age and amniotic fluid CA 125 levels (r = 0–53; P < 0–05), but no such relationship with CA 125 in coelomic fluid or maternal serum.
