Brutalist Tuscany: situated authenticity in a late-modernist interior

This study investigates the relationship between interior and architectural design, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving functional, aesthetic, and sustainable spaces. Falling under the descriptive research category, both descriptive and analytical survey methods were used to examine current design practices and the degree of correlation between integration, functionality, and user satisfaction. A review of seven previous studies provided a theoretical foundation, highlighting the interdependence of interior and architectural design across various contexts. These studies addressed disconnections between exterior and interior design, holistic approaches to design implementation, the role of technology in enhancing collaboration, and the cultural dimensions of integration. Case studies of residential, institutional, and cultural projects revealed that integrated design enhances spatial balance, sustainability, and user experience. Survey results from design professionals showed a strong awareness of the value of collaboration between interior designers and architects. Participants emphasized that lack of coordination negatively affects functionality and harmony, underscoring the need for structured, early-stage teamwork. The findings indicate that achieving coherent and sustainable design requires collaborative workflows, client participation, and the use of real-time digital tools. This study contributes to the field by proposing a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration, bridging the persistent gap between architecture and interior design. Practical implications include developing formal guidelines and training programs that foster integration between design disciplines, while social implications relate to enhancing user satisfaction and environmental quality through holistic design practices.

Measuring the success of a design project requires incorporating interior quality with architectural design within the construction industry, thereby promoting innovative solutions that meet client expectations. This study examines the influence of interior design and management on architectural design within the Nigerian construction industry. The research approach combined quantitative and qualitative techniques, utilizing a mix of open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires distributed to architecture and interior design professionals. Professionals in the construction industry were surveyed to evaluate their perceptions of how interior design and management influence architectural design. The findings revealed a strong consensus among respondents regarding the vital role of interior design in improving architectural design. 59.4% of participants consider interior design essential in the construction industry, while 67.3% recommend including interior design from the early stages of architectural design. The study highlights the relationship between interior design and architectural design, particularly in optimizing functionality, efficiency, and the mental well-being of occupants. It also identifies challenges in combining interior design with architectural practices and recommends innovative solutions through collaborative efforts. Thus, it emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in creating visually appealing, sustainable, and user-centered environments in Nigeria's evolving construction industry.

The paper discusses an interior architectural design model to enable the accomplishment of sustainable design strategy of efficient resources/waste management. The proposed design concept, referred to as interior architectural design for adaptive reuse, is based on the reintroduction of reclaimed or salvaged building construction materials and products acquired from demolished or refurbished building structural portions, into the structure of interior components. The presented design approach puts circular design methods and techniques in interior design practice at the core of environmentally responsible architectural design. To achieve its objectives, the implementation of resources efficiency strategy into the interior design scheme should remain a decisive interior design quality criterion. Meanwhile, the issues related to the environmental contextualization of interior spaces and their constitutive components, in fulfilment of sustainable design requirements for the conservation of natural resources, are neither sufficiently recognized by interior designers, nor appropriately highlighted in the current design practice. The main purpose of this concept paper is to develop a theoretical scheme for systemic inclusion of interior architectural design for adaptive reuse into the environmentally sustainable interior architectural design framework. This study provides interior designers with the concept of interior components design for the fulfilment of resources efficiency and waste management effectiveness.

How does architectural thinking make a difference in interior space? Is it just a formal difference? From two-dimensional decoration to three-dimensional space experience, this should be the biggest difference between the two. In simple terms, interior design pays more attention to decoration, while architectural design is basically functional design. If architectural thinking is applied to interior design, will it make the interior space more applicable, more scientific and more infinite? This paper combines a project of integrated architecture and interior design to interpret the infinite possibilities of architectural thinking in interior design. The purpose of this research is to reveal the publishing practices in the field of interior architecture, which progress through different types of publication sources, and the conceptual trends of the prominent publishing platforms in the field of interior architecture and design, according to bibliometric data. Within the scope of the research, interior architecture and interior design source titles were listed in the Scopus database between 2000 and 2025, and data was collected between 25 August and 10 September 2025 (Scopus, 2025). Also, R Studio-Bibliometrix-Biblioshiny software was used for data analysis and visualization of scientific maps (Bibliometrix, 2025). Research Design: The study is descriptive and exploratory in nature and aims to reveal the current state of interior architecture and interior design literature and explore future trends. Bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review were adopted as the primary research strategies. Data Collection and Source Selection: Databases: Academic publications that form the basis of the study will be obtained from the following international and national indexes: Scopus database. Main Keywords: "Interior design," "Interior architecture," "Interior space," "Spatial design," and "Interior decoration." Language: English publications will be included. Time Period: 2020-2025 (the last quarter century of the academic history of the discipline). Publication Type: Articles published in refereed academic journals and conference proceedings. Data Downloading: Full texts of publications that meet the determined criteria will be downloaded with their citation information (authors, publication year, keywords, abstract, number of citations, etc.) and combined in a database. Data Analysis and Visualization: The collected raw data will be processed and interpreted using the following bibliometric analysis techniques. Software such as Bibliometrix (R Package) was used for the analyses. Performance Analyses: Production Analysis: Determining the number of publications by year and the most active authors, institutions, and countries.

In the applications of interior and architectural design, there are various tasks range from ensuring desired floor colors/textures plans, to deciding furnishing arrangement styles: all depending upon the choices of designers themselves. Thus in this modern era of artificial intelligence, computer vision based applications are very popular. Many research studies have been conducted to address different interior design applications using virtual reality technology. However, VR based applications do not provide a realistic experience to the user for interior design. Therefore in this study, we present an Augmented Reality (AR) based end-to-end systematic approach for interior design initialized by deep matting of an indoor scene. In our proposed application, the user has the authority to choose various colors/textures to change the interior of the region of interest in an indoor environment. Our proposed application has different modules working jointly for efficient interactive interior design. It allows the user to select its region of interest (wall or floor) and then give options to choose a color/texture to map on ROI for interior design experience. The final results of our proposed approach give realistic experience to the users as we estimate the global illumination changes on the ROI in our joint modules. Hence in this way, our presented interactive interior design application is user-friendly and works efficiently with realistic looking outputs.

during the study process of implementation method for lighting effects in interior design, the light environment is designed in simplification when the current algorithm is used for interior design the desired rendering frame rate cannot be achieved. For this, a method for designing light utilization model in interior design is proposed based on the ray tracing algorithm. Firstly, the influence of visual and interior illumination design, artificial lighting, light and dark cycle of human body and light pollution are analyzed, to build scattering model of interior light, and ray tracing algorithm is utilized for optimizing facets intersection, spherical and surface intersection, rectangular and surface intersection, then the optimization algorithm and light and shadow algorithm are combined to form the illumination model of interior design, so as to achieve the lighting design in interior architecture. The simulation results show that, the method for designing light utilization model in interior design is proposed based on the ray tracing algorithm have comprehensive analysis, and the effect is ideal.

Contemporary LED technology in lighting industry allows today for almost endless design opportunities in architecture. Since 2000 the LED strip lighting became available on the lighting equipment market and slowly became affordable as the typical light source (bulbs) or linear light source (neon bulbs). Today it is implemented everywhere around the globe in exterior and interior design. Technological solutions are even more portable / easy-fixed and take less space and so linear lighting is not extraordinary or exceptional anymore. Although the linear lighting became very common since ca 10 years it have been used in interior or exterior design before but had some limits due to the technological reasons or have been implemented in another way. Design Lighting typology for interior and exterior design has been presented in the article along with several case studies that have been implemented. Limits and obstacles, advantages and disadvantages of the linear lighting have been discussed. Conclusions might be helpful for architects, interior designers, artists and light industry specialists. The author is a practicing architect with over ten years of experience in architectural and interior design with many implemented projects.
