Abstract

The enormous disasters caused by an earthquake force defensive structures to attenuate the effects of seismic waves on buildings. In this paper, to attenuate seismic waves, we propose a low-frequency seismic metamaterial consisting of H-shaped steel columns wrapped with rubber, which can possess a wide band gap with a relative ratio of 67.6%. The vibrational modes are explored to clarify the generation mechanism of band gap. The transmission coefficients of waves propagation in different directions are computed to confirm the efficiency of attenuating seismic waves. Finally, the dependence of the band gap on the geometric parameters is reported.
