Abstract

In this article, a short summary is presented on currently used Li-ion batteries and some other candidates for XEV applications. The working principles of Li-ion battery and the requirements for its four core materials, i.e., cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator are discussed in detail. The different requirements from the different types of XEVs are briefly introduced, following by the introduction of three typical formats of Li-ion cells. Other active candidates such as solid-state lithium battery, lithium sulfur battery, lithium air battery, nickel metal hydride battery, and fuel cell are also discussed.
