Abstract

This paper reviews what is known about breast milk transmission of HIV. It includes the following topics: 1) prevalence of HIV-1 among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa; 2) breast milk transmission of HIV-1 among women with new HIV infections in the postnatal period; 3) breast milk transmission of HIV-1 among women with established infection; 4) correlates of transmission; and 5) anti-infective properties of breast milk.
