Abstract

Current clinical dosimetry protocols based on the AAPM TG43 use water to model breast tissues while mammography standards propose the 50-50 model in which the average breast is made of 50% glandular and 50% adipose tissues. Recent studies show that the breast composition varies dramatically between patients depending on parameters such the age (Yaffe et al. Med Phys 2009 36). A recent work by our group (Afsharpour et al. Phys Med Biol June 2010; article in press) showed that the target and the skin doses are highly affected by the composition of the breast in low energy 103Pd permanent breast seed implants (PBSI).
